This,
and the next picture, are a "before and after" pair.
School used to tolerate my hair growing during the year but at the
ages of 16 and 17 I spent a week at a rugby training camp the school
ran at Prior Park College near
Bath. It was a week of great fun but
a lot of hard work. Even though my hair was within the limits for the
school rules it was too much for the head of rugby.
Noel Horrobin would
insist that I have my hair cut or he would stop me coming on
the training camp. Sometimes, well most of the time I think, he took
sport far too seriously. Still it was with great pleasure at the end
of my last season with the school that I told him that I would never
be playing rugby again when he offered to set me up with a local club.
It was not that I disliked the game, I loved playing ad even today
still watch it from time to time. For me the social aspect was what
put me off. I could never see myself as part of a rugby team, and all
the loutish, sexist behaviour which goes with it. |
